Spicy Brown Rice with Sausage and Peppers cooks together in the slow cooker for a delicious dinner that spicy sausage fans will love! And this amazing dish has a lot of sausage and peppers and not too much rice, so it’s surprisingly not that high in carbs if you eat it for a side dish.

Slow Cooker Spicy Brown Rice with Sausage and Peppers from Kalyn’s Kitchen

This Slow Cooker Spicy Brown Rice with Sausage and Peppers from Kalyn’s Kitchen is a delicious dinner option you’ll make over and over. I don’t mind chopping some sausage, peppers, and onions and browning them for a few minutes before they go in the slow cooker when I can end up with a dish as delicious as this, and I loved this recipe.

And this might make a good dinner on a day when you don’t think about what to cook until mid-afternoon, because after about 25 minutes to chop and saute the sausage, peppers, and rice, you can relax for the next two hours while the rice cooks unattended in the slow cooker!

What ingredients do you need for this recipe?

  • olive oil
  • turkey Italian sausage
  • green bell pepper
  • onion
  • canned chicken broth (affiliate link) or homemade chicken stock
  • Uncle Ben’s Brown Rice (affiliate link)
  • Spike Seasoning (affiliate link), or other all-purpose seasoning blend
  • salt
  • cayenne pepper (affiliate link)
  • chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Why is this recipe a favorite for me?

It’s probably the spicy Italian sausage that makes me love this recipe so much, but truly I like any combination that has Italian sausage and peppers. And Uncle Ben’s Brown Rice is a healthier rice than many other varieties, so I love this for a treat.<.p>

Recommended Slow Cooker Size:

I used my favorite Crock-Pot 3.5 Quart Slow Cooker for this recipe, but any size that’s close will work.

Sandi, so glad you have been enjoying it! I love the sound of that variation (and I have chicken-Andouille sausage in the freezer.)

Hi Kalyn, this has become my go-to dinner when I get home and have to turn around and go out for a few hours, but want to come home to a good meal.

Wanted to let you know that I did an odd variation of it and the Lake Powell Spicy Rice last night, it was a huge success. I substituted chicken andouille sausage for the turkey sausage, took out most of the cayenne (just because the sausage was pretty spicy), and added in the Tony Chachere's and a can of stewed tomatoes on whim. It was AWESOME.

Helene, this was hard to get a good photo of, but I absolutely loved it. And I am loving the idea of rice in the slow cooker in general.

I have never made a similar recipe before. I like the convenience of slow cookers and should try it. Thanks.

Pam, I agree completely. Sadly, some people won't even consider a recipe if you have to do any preparation other than putting the stuff in the slow cooker!

I've found that taking that extra time to do the browning always pays off in the end!
