(For Friday Favorites we spotlight past recipes that you may have missed, and if you're ready for some fall flavors, these Black-Eyed Peas and Ham from Skinnytaste sound delicious!)

I'm a huge fan of the funny little beans called black-eyed peas, and this recipe for Slow Cooker Black-Eyed Peas and Ham from Skinnytaste caught my eye partly for the way it starts with raw soaked black-eyed peas that cook with ham until the peas are done.  Then Gina adds seasonings and spices and cooks for an hour or so longer, which guarantees plenty of flavor in the finished dish!

  1. I'm a huge fan of black-eyed peas too! Nothing else does a good ham bone justice!

  2. I'm a huge fan of black-eyed peas, too, but not of ham. Often I'll add in some barbeque sauce to a dish that calls for ham or bacon, to get some smoky flavor without the meat. Don't know if that would work in this recipe, but I think it would.

  3. Pam, I first cooked them just a few years ago, but now they are a favorite.

Lydia, great idea to make this vegetarian by using some barbecue sauce (or even Liquid Smoke?) to replace the ham flavor.

  4. I love making black eyed peas with stewed tomatoes in the slow cooker. Hearty and filling. Oh, and I add a ham hock as well :)

  5. Love a good ham bone or smoked ham hock in my beans! Chorizo ads great flavor too. Using bbq sauce is a great idea for vegetarians, never thought of that.

  6. Kendra, fun to hear from another fan of black-eyed peas!

    Gina, agreed!
