Slow Cooked Homemade Refried Beans from Lynn's Kitchen Adventures

Homemade Refried Beans.
There are endless uses for these Homemade Refried Beans.  (Photo from Lynn's Kitchen Adventures.)

Homemade refried beans are healthier and more inexpensive than the ones that come in a can, but the most important reasons to make refried beans from scratch has to be the flavor you'll get from pinto beans that have been slow cooked all day while you're busy doing other things.  This recipe for Slow Cooked Homemade Refried Beans from Lynn's Kitchen Adventures sounds especially good to me, with a bit of onion, garlic, jalapeno, and cumin adding just enough spice to the beans.  Lynn uses her immersion blender to puree the beans, for creamy beans that you can use in an assortment of tasty Meatless Monday dishes.

  1. I have never made my own refried beans, in the slow cooker or on the stove, so I'm very happy to have this recipe. You could build an entire Mexican dinner party feast around this one dish!

  2. Lydia, I've had good luck making refried beans in the pressure cooker, and this sounds just as easy!

  3. I've used this recipe exclusively for making my own "refried" beans and it it's great. It makes about 6 cups, do I usually freeze some in 2-cup packages (in vacuum-sealed bags but a freezer bag would work too). Vegetarian daughter loves them. -Trish
