I'm speaking to myself as much as anyone when I say it's time to kick the canned bean habit.  It's not that I don't know how to cook dried beans in a slow cooker, it's just that I get lazy and it's so easy to grab a can of beans from the pantry.  But slow cooked beans taste so much better than canned ones,  and all those cans aren't good for the environment either, so I thought a collection of delicious recipes for cooking dried black beans in the slow cooker might provide some encouragement.  Check after the recipe photos for some tips for converting recipes that call for canned beans and few more slow cooker recipes that use cooked black beans.

Tips for Converting from Canned to Cooked Beans
Converting recipes from canned beans to cooked slow cooker beans is easy if you remember that one can equals 1 1/2 cups of cooked beans.  When I'm smart enough to cook dried beans in my slow cooker and stock up in the freezer, I like to freeze them in small bags that hold just 1 1/2 cups so it's easy to grab as many as I need.  Beans will keep in the freezer for months and if you squeeze the air out of the bags and make them flat, you can stack up quite a few.  Now here are some more recipes using cooked black beans to help you use them:

  1. This is a great reminder to me, too (and thanks for linking to some of my recipes). My favorite way to cook black beans in the slow cooker is to put them in overnight, for 18 hours on LOW. Works like a charm, with no effort from me. Then I can freeze them for later.

  2. Lydia, I have to try that method!
